A games page that never changes feels abandoned. One that changes with the calendar and the audience feels alive. The feed gives you categories, tags, device support and new games, which is enough to build themed selections: a summer page, a back-to-school page, a rainy-day page, a two-player page. This post shows how to plan them without extra tools and without bending the Partner Terms.

What you have to work with

Each feed entry has categories, tags, deviceSupport, screenOrientation, a short description and a thumbnail. The weekly flow of new games is described on the partner page. With these you can filter and group. What you cannot do is read the game's content or ratings, because the feed does not contain them. Any selection that depends on what the game is like has to come from you playing it.

Selection ideas that map to tags

ThemeHow to select
Quick breaksTags such as quick-play or hypercasual; check by playing that a round is short
Play with a friendThe 2-player tag; confirm each game really supports two people on one device
On the phonedeviceSupport not equal to desktop, portrait first
Brain gamesPuzzle, logic or brain tags
Racing and carsThe racing category and car tags
RelaxingTags such as relaxing or cozy; verify by playing
New this weekGames you have not seen before in the feed; see the weekly routine

The tag names in the table are examples of the kinds of tags that appear in the catalog. Look at your own copy of the feed to see the exact slugs before you build a filter.

Calendar themes

You do not need a game made for an event. Match the mood of the time of year to what the games are:

  • School holidays: quick, easy games for restless afternoons, and two-player games for siblings.
  • Back to school: short brain games for breaks.
  • Winter evenings: relaxing and puzzle games.
  • Big sports events: football and sports games, if the catalog has them at the time.
  • Autumn: if horror games fit your audience, a themed page for the season, with a clear note on age suitability.

Be careful with events that belong to other brands. A page about a sporting event can list football games, but it must not suggest that the games are official or connected to the event.

Keep the selection small

Eight to twelve games per theme is plenty. A themed page with fifty games is just a category page with a new title. Choose the best, order them by your own view, and write one sentence about each. Our post on writing your own page for each game describes how to add original text.

Plan a simple calendar

  1. List the four or five themes that fit your audience.
  2. Mark when each starts, with a week of lead time.
  3. Pick games for each theme at the start of the week before. Check that they are still in the feed.
  4. Play each selected game on a phone and a computer.
  5. Publish, share, and after the theme ends move the page back into a regular category.

Rules that still apply

  • Do not reward visitors for launching games, for example with a prize draw tied to plays. The terms forbid rewarding or tricking visitors into launches.
  • Do not claim the games as yours when you promote the theme. Say "games from PlayKovo".
  • Do not use feed images in ways unrelated to listing the games you embed.
  • If your audience is young, apply your own care in selection; see children and partners.

Measure and learn

After each theme, look at which game pages brought visitors and which did not, using your own analytics as described in measuring your games section. Keep what worked and drop what did not. Over a year you will build a small, reliable calendar that needs little work each month.
